Affirming the Personhood of Children At Conception

The Attack

Unborn children are being viciously assaulted and dehumanized in our society. What was recently unthinkable, the killing of unborn children, has now been hailed as a fundamental right. The act is celebrated and paraded as an exercise of femininity and reproductive control.

In addition, embryos are commonly viewed as simply biological organisms or “products of conception.” Some would argue that embryos are biological human entities but not human persons as if personhood was conferred at a later time in a human being’s life. Such an argument seeks to justify the dehumanizing treatment of unborn children but is unbiblical.

The Reality

God creates, at the time of conception, every human being as a person consisting of body and soul, having moral status (Ps. 51:5; Ex. 21:22-24) and being an image bearer of Him (Gen 1:27).

Before we were born, God knew and pre-determined our existence (Jer. 1:5; Ps. 139:13-16).

The Bible is clear that embryos are children. Just like neonates, infants, and toddlers are all children, embryos and fetuses likewise are children simply at a different stage of development. While we may have discrepant feelings towards the unborn vs the born child or while we may be less emotionally attached to the unborn, our feelings do not confer value, dignity, or worth to these children. Such disparate treatment of the unborn and the born is a reflection of fallen thinking.

Affirming Personhood

One reason, amongst many, we pursued embryo adoption was to affirm the image-bearing reality of these children and to live consistently with that reality and our profession of it.
